How to : Make Your Hair Grow Faster
We’ve all been there. You head to
the salon confidently, ready to try out a chic new hairstyle, only to
realize afterward that the bob or bangs you were so excited about aren’t
what you thought they’d be. Whether you’re recovering from a bad cut or
hoping for waist-length waves by your wedding day, waiting for your
hair to grow can be a rather tedious process.
Fortunately, I have tresses that
grow like a weed. (Here’s my hair last summer right after cutting it
and just 11 months later.) I’ve been able to donate my hair to
organizations like Locks of Love andPantene Beautiful Lengths a total of
five times (which requires chopping off 8 to 10 inches at a time). And
since I’m often asked what my secret is, today I wanted to share a few
tips that I’ve come across.
The average person’s hair grows a
quarter of an inch per month. And while there isn’t one miracle cure
for faster hair growth, there are several steps you can take to help
speed up the process. I can’t say for sure which one of these tricks is
responsible for my quick-fire strands, but if you’re looking to add some
length to your locks, trying them all can’t hurt…
Try prenatal vitamins.
Most prenatal vitamins contain biotin (along with iron and folic acid), which is said to promote healthy hair growth. Biotin will not only help your hair grow longer faster, but your skin and nails will reap the benefits too. Of course, it is best to consult your doctor before taking a new type of vitamin supplement.

Stick to healthy hair diet.
As you might remember this from Lauren’s Foods for Heavenly Hair post, whole grains, along with foods rich in calcium and the amino acid cysteine all promote hair growth. Cysteine is found in foods including poultry, eggs, red peppers, garlic, onions, Brussels spouts, yogurt, oatmeal, and broccoli. And if you prefer to stay away from supplements like the ones mentioned above, you can get your biotin from nuts (especially almonds and peanuts) egg yolks, soybeans, and fish.

Indulge in a scalp massage.
According to DailyGlow.com, giving yourself an at-home scalp massage increases blood flow to the scalp, which helps nutrients get to your follicles more quickly. So when you’re shampooing or rinsing your hair, try massaging your head with your fingertips to stimulate hair growth.

Time for a little myth busting…
I’ve always heard that frequent
trims make your hair grow faster. But the research I did for this post
(along with my own personal experience—I tend to go longer than
recommended between trims) revealed that tip to be completely false.
Since hair grows out of the scalp, trimming the ends will not affect its
growth.
That said, split ends could lead to breakage, which makes maintaining your
length difficult. To avoid split ends and breakage, keep heat styling
and processing to a minimum, and use only non-damaging hair elastics. As
I learned from Lauren’s Beauty book, if you tie your hair in the same place every day you will notice a line of breakage where the hair tie hits.

How Often Do You Shampoo ?
I had a member ask me how often I
shampoo my hair, and the question inspired me to write a blog post
entirely dedicated to the topic.
In chapter 3 of my book Lauren Conrad Beauty,
I wrote that determining how often you shampoo is really up to you.
Some professionals say you should lather up every day while others
suggest going as long as a week between shampoos. I’ve always been told
that washing your hair every day strips oil from your scalp and in turn,
encourages hair follicles to produce more oil which leaves hair greasy.
You can change this pattern by going longer in between shampoos, and
you will also give your hair more moisture in the long run.
Personally, I like to skip a few
days in between each shampoo because my hair goes through a lot of blow
drying, curling, and, well, experimenting (see what I mean by
“experimenting” here). Washing and re-styling my hair daily would leave
it dry and damaged beyond repair. But that’s just what I’ve figured out
for my beauty routine and it seems to work for me.

How Do I Fix Dry Skin ?
The winter season is in full
swing. Between harsh artic winds and frigid temperatures your skin is
probably suffering. If you’re like me, you are most likely anguishing
over one (or all) of the following: dry, chapped, or flaky skin. Let’s
just say that the Skin Gods are not on our side this time of year.
Luckily there are a few simple remedies for this mid-winter beauty woe.
Here are a few of my personal tips and tricks I turn to when my skin is
extra thirsty:
Turn down the heat. Hot
water leeches moisture from your skin. Be sure your shower is warm but
not scalding hot. Once you get out of the shower, apply a thick lotion
all over and then put on a cotton robe to give your body some time to
absorb and lock in the moisture.
Egyptian Magic. This
product is a serious miracle worker. I use it almost every single day.
After cleansing my face at night, I slather it all over my face and
neck. By the time I wake up in the morning, my skin is happily
moisturized (no matter how dry it was the night before).
Drink up! You
body is nourished from the inside out. Therefore it’s key to ensure you
are taking in lots of water throughout the day. If you don’t drink
enough water, your lips will be chapped and your skin will be dry.
Go Greek! The
lactic acid in Greek yogurt is very beneficial to your skin,
particularly when it’s dry. Give my Greek Yogurt Mask a try—it is both
nourishing and hydrating.
Make your makeup moisturize. During
the winter months, it’s important to update your beauty regimen. If you
have particularly dry skin, maybe use a milky foundation and skip the
powder. Or opt for creamier blushes. Sometimes I mix my moisturizer (I
use Kate Somerville Oil-Free Moisturizer, but CeraVe is also very good
and inexpensive) with my foundation or concealer, which make the
application smoother and it helps to quench my skin. If I’m on the go, I
like to spirtz some of this Neroli Water on my face too. It’s also very
hydrating.

Grapefruit and Oatmeal Detox Face Mask
I
don’t know about you but winter is a killer on my skin. All of those
hot toddies, cold temps and heat blasting into my cube all day are
taking their toll. I’ve been using and loving NYC-based celebrity
facialist Joanna Vargas‘ exfoliating mask to
put some pep back into my complexion (full review forthcoming!) so
jumped when she shared her three-ingredient recipe for a skin detox
using all things I have in my pantry. The grapefruit helps purge toxins,
oatmeal calms inflammation after a night of imbibing while also helping
to prevent breakouts, and the milk exfoliates using lactic acid while
also soothing skin. Enjoy!

The Tulip Manicure - JINsoon Dolly Pink
We don’t do a ton of nail art
here at BB because, frankly, I’m lucky enough to have time for a mani,
let alone one that requires artistic abilities. (Can you hear my
three-week old Shellac going clickety clack? Woops.) But this tulip
manicure by the eminent Jin Soon Choi was too killer not to share. It’s
got an art deco meets 60s vibe that I want to pair with white jeans and a
billowy top. If you dare, here’s how:
1. File and shape your nails to a natural square shape.
2. Apply a base coat like JINsoon Power Coat
3. Apply JINsoon Dolly Pink on the entire nail bed.
4. With a thin brush, create the tulip petals with JINsoon Cherry Berry. Starting at the cuticle area, draw a straight line down towards the tip of the nail, curving left ¾ of the way down to create an arch and then fill in the shape. Repeat on the right side of the same nail to create a mirroring shape.
5. Apply top coat like JINsoon Top Gloss for a lasting glossy finish.
